That Act establishes a council for each district established:

  • in pursuance of the Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 1971 or
  • by the 1972 Act.

The Department of the Environment has a list of the current councils:

2015 re-organisation

By virtue of the Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 and SR 2012/421, the districts in Northern Ireland will be re-organised on the local goverment election day (the first Thursday in May) in 2015. The new districts will be:

  • Antrim and Newtownabbey
  • Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon
  • Belfast
  • Causeway Coast and Glens
  • Derry and Strabane
  • Fermanagh and Omagh
  • Lisburn and Castlereagh
  • Mid and East Antrim
  • Mid Ulster
  • Newry, Mourne and Down
  • North Down and Ards
