FOIA Schedule I lists:
- 36 - A district council within the meaning of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972
That Act establishes a council for each district established:
- in pursuance of the Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 1971 or
- by the 1972 Act.
The Department of the Environment has a list of the current councils:
- Antrim Borough Council
- Ards Borough Council
- Armagh City and District Council
- Ballymena Borough Council
- Ballymoney Borough Council
- Banbridge District Council
- Belfast City Council
- Carrickfergus Borough Council
- Castlereagh Borough Council
- Coleraine Borough Council
- Cookstown District Council
- Craigavon Borough Council
- Derry City Council
- Down District Council
- Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council
- Fermanagh District Council
- Larne Borough Council
- Limavady Borough Council
- Lisburn City Council
- Magherafelt District Council
- Moyle District Council
- Newry and Mourne Council
- Newtownabbey Borough Council
- North Down Borough Council
- Omagh District Council
- Strabane District Council
These are expected to be reorganised into 11 new councils soon, but not before the end of 2011.
