A procurator fiscal is a public prosecutor in Scotland, also carrying out some of the investigatory functions done by the coroner in other legal systems but not any eventual Fatal Accident Inquiry. A procrator fiscal is subject to the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 as it is listed in Schedule I of the Act.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) is responsible for the prosecution of crime in Scotland, the investigation of sudden or suspicious deaths, and the investigation of complaints against the police.
