By virtue of {{nisr|2012|421}}, the districts in Northern Ireland will be re-organised on the local goverment election day (the first Thursday in May) in 2015. The new districts will be:

* Belfast
* Causeway Coast and Glens
* Derry and Strabane
* Fermanagh and Omagh
* Lisburn and Castlereagh
* Mid and East Antrim
* Mid Ulster
* Newry, Mourne and Down
* North Down and Ards

36 - A district council within the meaning of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland) 1972

That Act establishes a council for each district established:

  • in pursuance of the Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 1971 or
  • by the 1972 Act.

The Department of the Environment has a list of the current councils:
