The Local Government Act 1972 created metropolitan district councils for England, and provided for the naming of the metropolitan districts and the creation and naming of non-metropolitan districts, to be by order. The 1972 Act provided for district councils to be named "The District Council" with the addition of the name of the district.

Many districts have the status of city or borough conferred upon them by royal charter or letters patent. This tends to change the name of the district.
